In a contentious debate that stretched late into the night, Hingham Town Meeting narrowly approved funding for twelve new pickleball courts at Bare Cove Park. Article 20, which authorizes the use of $1,278,010 from unassigned fund balance, passed by a slim standing vote of 221-205. The funds will be combined with a separate $758,640 Community Preservation Act grant (Article 21) to cover the full $2.03 million project cost.
Recreation Commission Chair Vicky Donlin and other supporters argued that the courts are a much-needed amenity for the fastest-growing sport in the country, serving residents of all ages. Donlin emphasized that the project includes the demolition of the abandoned and unsafe "Traces" building, is sited over 800 feet from the nearest homes, and includes a 15-foot sound mitigation screen to address noise concerns. Proponents also stressed that the project would not raise taxes, as it relies on one-time funds from the town's healthy fund balance.
Opponents, however, questioned the project's necessity and cost. Judy Sneath called it an "optional project" that was moving forward while more critical needs, like a new chiller for the library, are deferred. Christine Smith urged the town to finish the previously approved South Shore Country Club pool project before starting a new one. Several residents raised concerns about noise, environmental impact on the nearby ACEC, and the use of a significant portion of the town's "rainy day fund" for what they termed a "want, not a need."
Motion: To appropriate and transfer the sum of $1,278,010 from unassigned fund balance for the design, permitting, bidding, demolition, site preparation, and construction of new pickleball courts at Bare Cove Park Drive.
Vote: Passed 221-205
